Building Information Modeling, or BIM, deals with the creation, management and sharing of reliable structured information throughout the lifecycle of a project of any size. It covers the design phase through construction and operation till demolition. BIM for the railway industry has been gaining momentum in recent years, and is one of GESTE Engineering SA's main areas of innovation.
The BIM methodology, which links geometric information to metadata, has many advantages, such as improved collaboration between disciplines, increased data traceability, improvement in the overall quality of projects thanks to easier conflict resolution, better cost control, simpler planning during the construction phase, decision-making based on indicators, and so on.
The advantages mentioned above make it possible to carry out ambitious multidisciplinary projects at the cutting edge of today's technologies. In this type of project, GESTE collaborates with multiple companies responsible for other disciplines, as well as with the customer. An important part of coordination is implemented by GESTE to guarantee project quality. The catalogue of BIM services offered by GESTE includes the following:
-
Existing conditions survey using point clouds (terrestrial scan, mobile mapping or drone)
-
Development of the BIM Execution Plan (BEP)
-
Modeling of existing and project conditions for all disciplines of the railway industry
-
Extraction of 2D drawings from the BIM model
-
Metadata management throughout the project's lifecycle
-
Clash detection between models/disciplines
-
Support to GESTE’s FLOWS unit for passenger flow simulations
-
Support to GESTE’s ENERGY unit for lighting simulations
-
Use of Virtual Reality (VR)
-
Structuring and management of collaboration platforms (Common Data Environment)
-
Application of the ISO 19650 series of standards and the IFC standard
GESTE has BIM experience on several major projects, including the Nantes tramway, the Etihad Rail depot, the line 15 of the Grand Paris Express and the upgrading of the train stations in Coppet and Nyon.
